The author attributes this failure to the still-prevalent racial tensions between whites and African Americans. She focuses on the dreams, aspirations, and lifestyles of African Americans in todays society. Hochschild examines how African Americans have made advances in society since the civil rights movement, and how nearly ar worried that their time of advance has come to an end.
